With the approach of summer in the northern hemisphere and the resumption of the post-pandemic economy, it is believed that the period of pent-up demand will cause a consumption boom and directly affect supply chains, at a time when world stocks are low and transportation is suffering due to the lack of containers and rising costs.

Adjusting the supply chain will take time and investment in production capacities and port infrastructure. In the very short term, companies need to revise their strategies, seeking to diversify their suppliers, improve commercial conditions and mainly avoiding the risk of supply interruption.

The month of April will be a great challenge for the sector, dealing with the drop of the demand in the domestic market and another strong increase in prices for the PE and PP segments. The last ten days of March showed a sharp drop on resin demand, affected by the lockdown in most major cities in the country, which generates many uncertainties for the beginning of the forthcoming month. Prices continue to rise in the domestic market, impacted by exchange rates hikes at the end of March and another sharp rise in prices in the international market.

Despite the temporary reduction in the import tax for polypropylene – PP (14% to 0%), this will not represent significant and immediate reduction in local prices. International production is starting to normalize, but with low productivity still. Offers are beneath the needs of the global market, as producers struggle to regain normal production and replenish stocks.

Wander Montesso, AdPoly’s CEO, carried out some Analysis of the trends in the Brazilian and global petrochemical market and concludes that there are important elements that had to be considered to support the decision to start the company’s internationalization, especially in the midst of a pandemic.

By increasing the share of imported raw material in the Brazilian market (35% PE and 23% PP), we believe in making the Brazilian plastic transformer aware of placing the imported material definitively in its purchasing portfolio.

In the global panorama of petrochemical operations, the production in the Gulf of Mexico is still compromised, and the bigger American companies have not yet resumed normal operations. They are expected to return between the end of March and the beginning of April 2021.

On top of this scenario, prices in April should continue rising until production returns to normal levels and inventory replenishment occurs.

The restructuring project started in 2020 and it has been coordinated by Opencap Global. According to Mr. Wander Montesso, founder and CEO, it has been a hard work season, with different challenges, exactly when the company celebrates 08 years of operations.
